The major projects include construction of 25 power distribution stations, expansion of 17 existing stations, and replacement of aerial electric cables with underground ones.

Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) will spend Dh1.3billion over a number of projects this year to meet the growing energy needs in four emirates – Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) and Umm Al Quwain (UAQ).

The major projects include construction of 25 power distribution stations, expansion of 17 existing stations, and replacement of aerial electric cables with underground ones, according to Mohammed Saleh, Director-General of Fewa.

The new power stations include two main stations costing Dh70 million each, and work of two stations is nearing completion, he added. Three new power substations at a cost of Dh28m “will be built at Al Jurf-3 area, Masfoot-2 area, and a third one in the main power station.”

Saleh added that UAQ will have five power stations, including the main power station at the Umm Al Thaub area.

“Four other stations worth over Dh28 million will be built at Al Hamra-2 area in April, Al Suwaihat area in June, the Intersection-2 area in August, and the Old City in December.”

As for RAK, ten new stations will be built at different areas, which includes Dahan main station.

He said: “This major station, which is expected to be completed in February is valued at Dh70 million.”

The Central region will get a new substation at Taiba area against Dh28 million in August, benefitting both the residential and industrial areas, he said.

Fewa will also spend Dh116million to expand 17 power stations and connect the Dahan and Umm Al Thaub main stations. It will also replace the aerial power cables with underground cables in UAQ and Ajman against a total value of Dh55 million. Meanwhile, aerial power cables will be installed in Fujairah to connect the two power stations at the Didana area, Saleh said.

“The Twain station will be connected with the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Network against Dh47 million, let alone another project for connecting the distribution stations with the main network against Dh71 million.”
